Thurles

Thurles town is located in mid-County Tipperary and is surrounded by the Silvermine Mountains to the northwest and the Slieveardagh Hills to the southeast. The town itself is built on a crossing of the River Suir which adds to the beauty of Thurles and it’s surrounding countryside. Thurles is a thriving commercial and business centre, a hub of activity and a great place to visit.

Thurles is known as the 'Home of Hurling' and is proud of it's sporting heritage.  Thurles Town is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and in fact Thurles was the first town in Ireland to claim the the prestigious title of ‘European Town of Sport’ in 2012 when a delegation from the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES) (who formed a team to inspect our town’s top sports venues) witnessed the huge range of sports offered to the people of Thurles and stated that there truly is something for everyone to engage in and get active here in our town.

Hurling and Semple Stadium located in Thurles is the second largest stadium in Ireland.

Fishing - The River Suir running through Thurles is one of the premier Trout angling rivers in the country, season runs from 17th March – 30th September, permits are required.

Golf - There is an impressive selection of golf courses in the area surrounding Thurles.

Pitch and Putt - Situated deep in the heart of Templemore Town Park Lakeside Pitch and Putt Club is a magnificent 18 hole championship course which has hosted many County, Provincial and National Championships 

Walk and hike through the many trails throughout the Munster Vales, the Knockmealdowns, Slieve Feilim, the Silvermines, Galtee Mountains and The Devil’s Bit taking in the splendour of the Golden Vale. Tipperary has walking trails to suit both the casual walker as well as experienced hikers.  There are also scenic  trails around Upperchurch, a walkers paradise, 18 miles outside the town.
