Enjoy the fantastic scenery on a walk in Ireland’s Premier County with mountain hikes, riverside paths and lake views all on offer in Co Tipperary.
Bordering eight counties, with Offaly and Galway to the north and Cork and Waterford in the south, Tipperary is home to the famous Rock of Cashel and to some amazing mountains like the Galtee Mountains, The Devil’s Bit and Slievenamon.
This loop walk near Templemore will take you along the side of the Devil’s Bit mountain. If you wish to reach the summit (478 m) there is a path leading off the loop. From the top, you can see all eight of Tipp’s surrounding counties on a clear day. This walk is on Sandy laneways, forestry tracks and hillside paths. The total length of the loop, not including the climb to the summit, is five kilometres and should take you about two hours. There are some steep inclines on this walk so a moderate level of fitness is required. The route starts about three kilometres from Templemore just 15 km from us here at the 4 star Anner Hotel, Thurles.
This is a short hike to suit all levels of fitness. The three-kilometre walk is the development of a heritage, angling and conservation project undertaken by the local community in recent years. The land was previously belonging to Bord na Móna and was used for milled peat production. Now it is home to a lake, two wetland areas and wildlife sanctuary as well as this loop walk. This one is perfect for kids as they can look out for all the wildlife that make this park their home. It is situated just under the Slieveardagh Hills. Loch Dhoire Bhile is about 3.5 kilometres outside New Birmingham village just 14 km from us here at the 4 star Anner Hotel.
The Lough Derg Way is a 68km (42 miles) trail that begins in Limerick City and ends in Dromineer, County Tipperary. It is typically completed in three days although you can break it up and complete smaller sections. As you hike you’ll encounter mesmeric views over the tranquil waters of Lough Derg to the shimmering Clare Hills beyond its shores.
Starting in Kilcommon village, some 29 kilometres from the 4* Anner Hotel, the 7km Kilcommon Pilgrim Loop brings you along the old mass path over the Bilboa River and on to the lower slopes of Mauherslieve Mountain, where it loops back to Kilcommon. Along the way, you’ll cover minor roadways, forestry roads and cross country trails and the views over the Tipperary and Limerick countryside are majestic. This walk takes about 2–2.5 hours to complete and is of moderate difficulty.
This loop takes walkers into Grange Crag Wood and past a very interesting €˜ice-house’ structure to a viewing point directly above the village from where Grange’s medieval tower-house castle and the surrounding countryside as far as the Devil’s Bit Mountain in the west can be seen Grange is a very small village in the Slieveardagh Hills on the Tipperary border with Kilkenny. It lies just east of the magnificent ruin of Kilcooly Abbey founded in 1182 and operated by the Cistercian order. Grange derives its name from its being an out-farm or the Gainseach (in Gaelic) of Kilcooly. The village is based around the medieval tower-house castle that protected the area for the abbey estate. The Grange area is acknowledged to be extremely attractive in terms of scenery and interesting in its historical heritage and is just 21 kilometres from the 4* Anner Hotel.
If you love to strap on a sturdy pair of hiking boots and hit the trails then you’ll find paradise where the River Aherlow runs between the Galtee Mountains and the wooded ridge of Slievenamuck. There are eight looped walks to choose from in the Glen of Aherlow, across forest tracks and open moorland, through spectacular landscapes of mountains, rivers, lakes and forests. Five of the walks start at the Christ the King Trail Head, and three from Lisvarinane Village Trail Head. Ranging in distance from 2km to 10km, there is something to suit all abilities.
Welcome to the Derrynaflan Trail, a driving trail that will take you along the highways and byways of Tipperary. Here you will discover the rich ecclesiastical heritage of this wonderful part of Ireland, from the Slieveardagh Hills around Killenaule, across Littleton Bog and on to Holycross on the banks of the River Suir. The trail leads you to church sites, old monasteries, graveyards, holy wells and other sacred places.
These heritage sites contain a wealth of stories and history spanning 15 centuries, from the earliest years of Christianity in Ireland in the decades after St Patrick, to modern churches that are still used as places of worship.
