Time for The Butler Trail

Explore the medieval heartlands of Tipperary and discover centuries of drama, romance, intrigue and deadly rivalries as you follow in the footsteps of the powerful Butler dynasty.

The Butlers have left an indelible mark on the landscapes of Tipperary as they constructed castles, mansions, founded churches and monasteries and established towns and settlements. Their rise to power, and the bitter rivalries that broke out along the way, forever shaped Irish history.

Experience a 2 day adventure package which includes the following from only €175 per person:

Day One

CAHIR CASTLE 

Visit this mighty fortress built on a rock in the middle of the River Suir. The scars of battles and sieges of long ago are still visible. This castle remains as one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval castle and its beautiful setting has been the highlight of many movies.

SWISS COTTAGE

Enjoy a beautiful walk along the tree-lined banks of the River Suir to see the exquisite Swiss Cottage.

You may choose to view the inside of this beautiful property by booking as an optional extra.

THE CRAFT GRANARY 

Enjoy a visit to The Craft Granary in Cahir, a beautifully restored 19th century grainstore. It now acts as a showcase for quality handcrafted items from the South East of Ireland. Enjoy 10% off all items instore when you visit as part of this visitor package.

 

LUNCH OPTIONS- individually prices and not included in the package

Enjoy a taste of Tipperary and rest a while for lunch. The following are some recommended provided of fine lunch fare in Cahir:

TIPPERARY COUNTY MUSEUM 

Discover the hidden history of the town of Clonmel, where you can find the stately Main Guard and see the strong town walls that once denied Oliver Cromwell himself.

Visit Tipperary County Museum and learn about the history and heritage of the county from prehistoric to modern times.

Day Two

SUNRISE WALK

Join Cathal and the Climb Ireland team who will offer you a really unique location experience with a guided walk at Sunrise through The Galtee Mountains or The Devil’s Bit, bringing you through a walker’s paradise with beautiful mountain lakes, waterfalls and rich bog life.

CASHEL FOLK MUSEUM

After exploring the beauty of the Galtess, take a step back in time and immerse yourself in Ireland's rich history at Cashel Folk Museum where a rich history of nearly 400 years awaits you with historical artifacts onsite date back 20,000 years.

ROCK OF CASHEL

Your  journey through the stories of the Butlers is just a glimpse of the historic treasures of Tipperary, when you will encounter world renowned heritage like the magnificent Rock of Cashel, overlooking the Golden Vale.  Once the traditional seat of the kings of Munster, the Rock of Cashel is one of the foremost pieces of Celtic art and medieval architecture in Europe, a truly remarkable piece of history and an integral monument in Ireland's Ancient East. 

FETHARD VILLAGE

Take time to stroll through Fethard Village and visit the historical sites. This village is seeped in history and stories. Fethard is also internationally known in the thoroughbred horse racing industry as the home of Coolmore Stud.

 

MCCARTHYS OF FETHARD

Before you leave Fethard a visit to McCarthy’s of Fethard is a must, where they will “wine you, dine you and bury you.” McCarthy’s is a well-established undertakers as well as a fine restaurant and bar. Food served Wednesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm.

Climb Ireland

Experience the county by foot with a beautiful exhilarating walking experience with Climb Ireland. Walks vary from 1 hour to 5 hours in duration.

Follow the path of legends when you enjoy a unique and wonderous experience at the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) museum and learn more about the story of Gaelic games and that of our unique national sport of Hurling through the ages.

Cahir Equestrian

Enjoy a unique horse riding experience at Cahir Equestrian. Cahir Equestrian offers a variety of equestrian services in the heart of horse country in Tipperary. Horse riding lessons and Summer Camps are offered at the rates below:

Visitor Rates

Summer Camps are run over 3 days, 10am to 4.30pm. Rates of €50 per day.

Horse Riding lessons last 1 hour in duration.

Rates: €25 for adults. €20 for children. Family rate of €20 per person offered.
